Thanks to @Inhabitat, we found something fantastic the other day and are subsequently very excited to get to try it ourselves (fingers crossed).

In case you haven’t heard already, ExxonMobil and Electrovaya have teamed up to present the Maya 300 – a fully electric supercompact that promises a 120-mile range on an 8-10 hour charge. That’s a charge that can be obtained through any household 110-volt outlet, too!

The Maya 300 is available for a free ride-and-drive to ticket holders at the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore. Once the free trial period is up, the cars will be available for hourly rent through the altcar program. Altcar is similar to other ride sharing programs (like Zipcar) in that it provides a low-cost, eco-friendly alternative to car ownership or even traditional rental. However, unlike its predecessors, altcar’s fleet is 100% electric! Altcar’s fleet is also city-only (meaning its cars can’t go on roads with higher than 35mph limits), so it will be great to see how well this catches on in downtown Baltimore. Hopefully it will grow enough to catch on in other cities as well!

Beyond the altcar program, there’s no word yet on when/if the Maya 300 will be available for private purchase, but there is a place on the Maya 300 website to inquire further on fleet sales.

Meanwhile, we’re working on a date to try out the Maya 300 for ourselves and get back to you with a better review of this neat little grocery-getter. As for urban green ideas like car shares, we’re a little “greenlocked” out here in central PA. It’s great to see an opportunity like this within day-trip reach for us to explore firsthand and tell you about later!
